For nine days and nine nights, some of those who celebrate Navratri next month will be mindful of what they eat. Simple sattvik food, which uses no garlic, onion or even table salt, will be cooked at home and for those looking for an option to eat out, restaurants in both Mumbai and Delhi will lay out a vegetarian spread that is both sumptuous and healthy.

Mumbai

Soam

There are dishes such as Rajgira (made with amaranth flour) puris with Undhiyoo, a traditional Gujarati delicacy of mixed vegetables, Sabudana (sago) khichdi, Farali dosas, Kand (purple yam) ni pattice, Kand ni chilla and more on the Navratri menu at Soam. Says Pinky Dixit, who owns Soam, one of the most popular restaurants for traditional Gujarati food and Navratri dishes, “We’ve had a menu for both Shravan and Navratri since the time we’ve opened and the fasting food or what we call farali food has been really popular with even those who don’t fast.” Dishes such as farali sev puri have been a big hit, adds Dixit.

Here are Dixit’s three top picks for farali snacks in Mumbai

Godbole Stores

It’s mostly for my mother that I go shopping for these snacks. We call her the “Fasting Queen” at home because she fasts three times a week. I love the rajgira cookies at this store and also the farali Maharashtrian chewda made from potato.

Chheda Stores

I like their farali ka khara and their rajgira chikki that comes in handy, individually-wrapped bite-sized pieces is great too. I just put it in my mother’s bag so she can eat them even on the go.

When: 8.30 am-9 pm.

Appetiite

I love their farali bhakri, which is like a cross between a paratha and mathri, made with amaranth flour and includes ginger and chilli. It’s my go-to snack with chai and I also carry it along when I travel.
